World of Birds- Western Capercaillie

November 3rd, 2012: Does anyone know how many are in the US? There are at least 4 at the Bronx.
thks for BZF. One awesome bird. it appears you seen a female, did you manage to see the male? also is this exhibit closed from everything else cause i think western capercallies like the weather colder?

I have seen them kept in aviaries which have partitions big enough for the hen to get through but too small for the cock, so that the former doesn't get too badly beaten up. Is that done in the Bronx? And I don't envy any keeper having to go in with male Capers - they can be seriously feisty birds!!

There is one male with at least 3 females. The male didn't seem agressive to the females. They are all kept together. There are several other birds in this exhibit, but I can't remember what they were.

I recall seeing at least two males. I know Northern Flicker and Hoopoe are two species kept in with the capercaillies.
