The new lion enclosure for african lions in Wuppertal Zoo, is huge, and has to be one of the best i have seen. It opened in May 2007 along with the new tiger enclosure. A lot has been done to make it look like an actual savannah.

I remember seeing 1.3 lions in the main enclosure, and two young males in another smaller enclosure in the Lion Cave. It says in ISIS that they keep 5.4, with two new babies, so that sounds about right, if these babies are males, born after my visit in July 07.
Yes very good for the lions and tigers which have great new big places to laze about in, but has anyone else seen the awful cages that the other big cats are still in?
I visited Wuppertal in December 08 and although the zoo was mostly good the small cages for some of the big cats made me sad.
I also noticed the same in Berlin ( both zoo's ) so is this a German thing to keep big cats in small spaces?
Also at Duisburg the tiger enclosure was very small too.
No, it is an old-zoo thing. Which they have a lot of in Germany. But I, and most members here, try to focus on the fact that the Germans can build fantastic enclosures such as this one.
Sure this is true, when these zoo's do build new enclosures they are big and impressive, the lion and tiger areas at Wuppertal are stunning, however it is also very sad to see a beautiful black panther stuck behind bars in a small cage, i hope in time they will also build a new home for the other cats as to me it seems the zoo still has the space.
But I did notice a new area for the penguins being built so I guess the money can only go so far.
