Young striped hyena (April 19th, 2015)

Young striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena). The striped hyena couple had two cubs in early 2015. Unfortunately, the female didn't take good care of them. One of the cubs died, the other had to be taken away and hand-reared. Quite nice to see a young striped hyena, already not a commonly seen species.

Aw, he's adorable. I recall reading that Olmen's male hyena (this animal's father) past away as well, is that right? Or has he been replaced yet?

I haven't heard any news about the male hyena having died. I didn't read anything along those lines either on the Olmense Zoo's own webpage or Facebook, or on two Dutch zoo-related forums.

I think I read it on Laafse Kikkers, it wasn't announced on Facebook however (zoos only announce deaths of iconic, famous animals on Facebook nowadays).

I looked it up and it did indeed come up on Laafse Kikkers. While I read the Olmense Zoo topic, I seem to have missed or forgotten that one when I uploaded these pictures, my bad.

No news about a replacement for now, though. It would be nice if this species did not dissapear from Olmen eventually, though.

Yeah it would be a shame if it left, not many collections breed this species nowadays so it'd be great if Olmen could continue breeding them.
