to Americans the name leopard shark refers to Triakis semifasciata which has completely un-leopard-like saddle markings. The species is only found in western American waters.
I only ever know Stegostoma fasciatum as the leopard shark. I know its also called zebra shark but only the young are banded - albeit very strikingly so! The adults (as pictured above) seem much more deserving of the name leopard shark than the American Triakis.
