A view into the second of the two outdoor exhibits for chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) by the Ape House in ZOO Antwerpen. The outdoor ape exhibits are essentially outdoors but partly covered over and sheltered on the sides, the advantage being that the animals can use them when it is cold outside. They are also jammed with climbing frames and enrichment equipment.
The Ape House was built in 1959 in typical 50es style with moated outdoor exhibits and originally housed bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. In 1986 the whole house was renovated and the moats removed to be replaced by covered outdoor exhibits.
