ZOO Antwerpen - Aquaforum

The sea lion exhibit inside the Aquaforum in ZOO Antwerpen. The top part of the Aquaforum is only open during the 2-4 daily sea lion shows featuring a group of Californian sea lions (Zalophus californianus). The bottom part with underwater viewing is open at all times. The show is surprisingly good and quite informative.

The Aquaforum was originally built as a Dolphinarium as part of the Jubilee Complex which opened in 1968 to celebrate the zoo’s 125th anniversary (also including the Bird of Prey Aviaries, Nocturama and Carnivore exhibits). The last two bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) left for Duisburg Zoo in 1999 and the building was renovated to only house sea lions in 2000.

There are some offshow bassins, but they are quite small, but all in all is it not a very small pool for sea lions, but it is unfortunately all-indoors.

I also found the underwater viewing area to be quite gloomy and depressing. I wonder if there are future plans to change the use of this part of the zoo.
