Zoo Atlanta actually has 4 gorilla habitats, and they are one after the other in a huge ape section of the zoo. Apparently there are 22 gorillas and 11 orangutans, both just about the most in North America. The exhibits were all good and quite impressive, but simply not the best of their kind. After the Bronx Zoo's Congo Gorilla Forest everything else pales in comparison. I'd rank Atlanta's gorilla habitats as above average.
Zoo Atlanta was ranked as one of the 10 worst zoos in the U.S.A. around about 1984, according to the Humane Society. They went on a 5 year spending spree that resulted in many world class exhibits, but the zoo has been fairly stagnant for close to 20 years. The huge draw are the giant pandas, orangs and gorillas, but they could use an influx of cash for newer habitats for several animal species. After my thread Snowleopard's Epic Road Trip I said that this was a good zoo but not a top 10 one.
