Excellent new cafe in the African Forest addition. In case you cannot read the offerings, options include free range chicken platter, seasoned turkey burger or vege burger, three cheese grilled cheese sandwich, plus some very tasty gourmet salads (italian pasta, etc). Houston Zoo gets an A rating from me for having a good selection of healthy and humane food offerings. One of my biggest complaints about American zoos is that too many still have poor food choices.
The cafe itself also has a nice decor and good size. Plenty of indoor seating plus two outdoor patios - one overlooking ostrich/giraffe exhibit and one overlooking kudu/rhino exhibit. Way to go Houston!
Totally agree about zoo food its usually horrible and overpriced. One of the best foodstands that comes to mind for us is the La Gran Cocina at the Brookfield Zoo.There they have a build your own burrito bar,Connies Pizza which is also served at Chicago sporting events and Vienna hot dogs.We always go with the burritos they are huge and only cost like 5 or 6 dollars.
I only had a small pizza at the Houston Zoo (and then there were a few months until the new part of the zoo would open, it was a catering facility near the entrance if I remember correctly) but I seem to recall being rather impressed with the vairity of food to choose from.
