You're right. And I never thought about that. The male rhino usually gets the paddock labeled "rhino" and the female and the baby are next door in the "axis deer" paddock. Though the rhinos sometimes do switch.
Im wondering what the future will bring to this zoos 2 main exhibits in the main entrace area meaning the asian elephants & bear grottos? right now currently the zoo plans on building a new polar bear exhibit and the sitituation with the elephants most likely they will be gone in the next few years. so Im curious on how the design team works on the new polar bear exhibit? How's the zoos entrace look? is it outdated? If so im wondering if the zoo will take that approach and redesign a new entrace area where the current asian elephant exhibit is and where the old entrace was that will be part of the new polar bear exhibit? also whats in the empty exhibit shown on the map in front of rainforest falls and to the left of the rhino exhibit? and im also wondering if they will keep the seasonal train ride too.
In the summer of 2010 the empty exhibit to the left of the Indian rhino paddock had pigs, goats and at least one other domestic species within it. The entrance to the zoo is outdated and I'd heard that the Bear Pits would be torn down and that area would be replaced by a brand-new polar bear habitat. Other than a single female polar bear the rest of the bruins are all elderly and as they die off the zoo will not replace them. The zoo has not mentioned what it plans for its two Asian elephants, but my personal opinion is that they will be gone in 4 years or less. Other than the fairly new exhibits (Rainforest Falls, Sea Lion Cove and Otter Creek) the zoo ranges from average to awful which is astonishing as it is 15 minutes away from one of the most popular tourist attractions in North America. Niagara Falls is perhaps the only reason that the zoo is even still in existence, but at least that wonderful natural phenomenon is not going anywhere.
The zoo may lose their elephants if they don't get a third elephant and expand their area, but I doubt they will get rid of them voluntarily. As team tapir mentioned in another thread, the zoo spent a good amount of money on renovating a new barn. I doubt they would spend that much money if they planned to get rid of the exhibit a few years later.

Calgary Zoo spent $10 million on Elephant Crossing in recent years and this week they announced that they plan to end their elephant program, so anything can happen. It is just a matter of time before Buffalo Zoo decides what to do with its elephants, as the current exhibit (or even the "herd" size) is obviously not going to be good enough in the future.
Thanks for bringing up that point. Well, I hope the zoo does get rid of their elephants. Perhaps they could move them to Rosamond Gifford Zoo since they have their new exhibit now and it wouldn't be a far move. I do hope they preserve the elephant building though, I love the outside architecture.
