Actually they rather looked like Jaguars to me when I saw them, but as I recall it, the label said leopards. Of course the pattern of the fur makes the difference between the two, but across a wide moat it is hard to spot, especially in black specimens.
True, you can also judge by the size of the head. Come to think of it, those were Jaguars almost certainly, at least they were not as slender as leopards often are, they were bulkier.
