Zoo Praha - First Polar Bear exhibit

First Polar Bear exhibit. In my earlier comment I noted that it was small and disappointing, which it is, but then I was informed that it is just a modified 80-year old exhibit and that Prague Zoo plans to built a totally new exhibit for its Polar Bears.

How recent is this exhibit? It looks atrociously small for such a large roaming species, and looking at the photo I would have guessed that the enclosure had been constructed 50-80 years ago!

This bear exhibit was constructed in 1932. It has gone through a renovation in 1995 - the former dry moat was filled with water, glass panels were added, and concrete walls were covered with a thin layer of "artificial rocks". There are two polar bear exhibits side by side, the second one is bigger, and they are currently connected so that animals can use them both.

A new polar bear exhibit is the next big project of the zoo, after new elephant and hippo houses will be finished.

Jana, thank you for the info. I don't speak Czech so I could not understand the sign about the developments at Prague Zoo. All I understood was '1995' and was therefore somewhat shocked that such a tiny exhibit had been built so recently, especially since Prague Zoo has ample space.
