I was brought up in Sheffield. I joined the Sorby Natural History Society there, and the Zoological Society of Ashover Zoo. I worked for 3 months at Ashover until it closed. Full marks for education, but unfortunately the zoo was never modernised as was planned. I then worked at Chester Zoo which was much better, though, at the time (1970s) it was a bit slow off of the mark when it came to breeding programmes. As I was 16 at the time, I couldn't feasibly fulfil my dream of working at Jersey Zoo.
