Just seen an update that says will be closed until further notice.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed that samples taken from captive birds which died at Fota Wildlife Park have tested positive for avian influenza virus (H5N1).

Fota is to euthanise 11 greylag geese after evidence that they have bird flu. Steps are also being taken to reduce contact between captive and wild birds: Fota Wildlife Park to remain closed for several weeks amid avian flu outbreak

They are expected to take a hit of more than €1m, although their existing plans are working well, and most birds are healthy.

There is also a reference of some bird enclosures potentially being netted over, so I assume this concerns the flamingos and the water part of the penguin enclosure. I don't know how this'll affect the free-roaming birds and the ratites: Fota Wildlife Park confirms major financial hit after avian flu forces closure

There is very little news about Avian flu in Ireland in the mainstream media and yet it seems to be chronic in Fota. I assume all the euthanased birds were Waterfowl. Fota attracts massive amounts of Corvids and Gulls and wild ducks, and I am curious as to how they are handling this. Anyway I hope things are back to normal soon.

I'm not sure if this counts as mainstream, but I've heard on the radio to report any dead birds that you see, and to not go near or allow anyone, including pets to approach the bodies.

Fota have euthanased all unvacinated birds. 73 in all, the rest are isolated. The park will remain closed till at least end of november. They are appealing for donations.
What bird species and numbers are we talking about?

BTW: I feel it is a deepest darkest blotch on the mark of (hu-)mankind that after years of dealing with medical issues like Avian Flue there still is no adequate treatment nor vaccination available for bird species. If this were on the human medicine scale ... social media and public opinion would burn those perpetrators ... at the stake like it was the Dark Ages of burning women (mostly) at the stake for being a "witch".

(I just had to observe this, bc I ... do think it is vile how we pompously deal with wildlife and a flue we by our own species have enabled to spread globally (similarly like a few other major zoonotic diseases ....)
