You will love it. My only advice is to get onto booking the accommodation there as soon as possible.
Id add that if possible it's a good idea to stay at least two nights because the kiwi can be difficult to find (I think it took me three nights once). It puts less pressure on. Also - unless they've changed it - the ferry doesn't go every day.

Did you go to Izumi?

Correct. It only goes Wednesday to Sunday.
Would highly recommend staying between Sunday to Wednesday although, did that last time I went with my friend and basically had the island all to ourselves without the day visitors.
I will also say that I generally find Little Spotted Kiwi to be quite easy to see on Tiri just by staying out and walking late enough, they're basically all over the island and any of the main walking tracks you have good odds I'd say.
Remember to check the big wooden mural when you first get off the wharf as there's usually a Duvacuel's Gecko or two hiding under them : )

Back from sunny Cairns. I’m happy with the overall results. The only major dip was Lumholtz’s Tree-Kangaroo (again…) and a few common birds like Papuan Frogmouth and Yellow Honeyeater. But the big three – cassowary, croc and striped possum were achieved. A few additional highlights; a fleeting glimpse of a Musky Rat-Kangaroo in the late afternoon, large flocks of Sarus Cranes over farmland, around 40 sightings of Rose-crowned Fruit-Doves on Green Island, wild reef sharks and fantail rays, huge green frogs and a double mega rodent sighting with a Rakali and White-tailed Giant Rat within minutes of each other in the heart of Cairns. The Daintree was particularly unique I found and I want to spend more time there; beachy mangrove forest with rainforest made for an interesting blend of species. One minute fiddler crabs and archerfish were emerging while I walked past cassowary poo and calling riflebirds. A special place. In terms of bugs, lots of enormous katydids on night walks including the Spiny Rainforest Katydid which a few Australian zoos are acquiring which was so cool to see in the wild. Peppermint Stick Insect was another bucket list insect. Finally, a tropical flush of butterflies and spiders was most welcome. More identifications will come through in the coming days.

Final update before I embark on my first ever trip to Western Australia in three weeks. I will be targeting most of the south-western endemic birds with a few key non-avian targets. Below are a few bits and pieces with the lizard being a late identification from my travels in far-north Queensland. I already want to return again. Birding locally has been a little less fruitful than I would have liked for spring with showers and storms most weekends. Some rainforest birding on Friday brightened spirits with some nice sightings like a pair of Regent Bowerbirds and Pacific Emerald Dove. Spotted Quail-thrush and Sahul Brush Cuckoo have been recent targets but both have been heard but not seen. I think I am going to stake out a reliable site for the cuckoo and just wait for it to pop up. They aren’t rare at all at this time of the year; I just haven’t seen one! Alternatively, I will just forget about it and then it will show up when I least expect it. Invert #410 deserves a special mention. My absolute number one damselfly to see; it has taken years of active searching but I finally found it. Worth searching this one up – Gold-fronted Riverdamsel.

I'm not sure the Green Pheasant has ever been included in colchicus so it couldn't be split. However Korean Ring-necked Pheasants are introduced in parts of Japan.
Oh, huh, I could have sworn they used to be (and still are by some) included in colchicus. At least that's what Wikipedia says :p

I just looked that up. It seems they were lumped in the 1990s. I've never seen any reputable source retaining that in recent decades.

The source on the Wikipedia page appears to be some random persons blog. That's the problem with so many "good" sites simply cut-and-pasting Wikipedia articles (like iNaturalist, for example) as their text.

Well I leave for Indonesia in just over a day and only now getting my second update in.. I have been meaning to get better with updates and write ups but can clearly see how that turned out haha, going out for another attempt at Leadbeater's Possum soon so trying to get this report out fast, here's just a brief recap of what else I did in NZ before moving to Australia on the 14th (I'll post an Aus recap before I leave for Indo), I did a write up the rest of my lil public transit Big Day on the BirdingNZ forum here, so I'm unsure if I'd do another (I intend on making a seperate thread for these posts at well, some point..), seeing a chaffinch that late is quite embarrassing but oh well.
Spotted Shags were a very nice little pick up as they're part of the critically endangered Hauraki Gulf population/ssp and just a 20 minute walk from my place in NZ! Also a throwback to here where I had an 'unidentified' shag which I did end up identifying later as a Spotted Shag so I was quite plussed to get it again at the same spot.
Other taxa would be on my iNaturalist I just don't have the time to make a list right now haha
Hopefully another post will come soon and I'll be able to keep better track in Indonesia !

Well I'm currently in Sorong and leave for Klalik in an hour lol, putting together and formatting these lists for ZooChat takes a long time not to mention how many times I've randomly lost all my progress by accidentally closing/refreshing the ZooChat text box.. (I have the list and everything on a doc but then i have to reformat it for the forum). So as the only thing I really can do fast here's a list of all the birds I've seen in exact chronological order [I keep track of this with a paper and pen in field haha], I can say I'm definitely extremely grateful for the friends I've made in Australia and thus all the travelling I've been able to do for it. Perhaps some day full trip reports will come, I do keep a decent amount of notes in my spreadsheets for extra information on my sightings but for now I've just add dates to my list and some relevant eBird trip reports as I can say I've became thoroughly addicted to the platform over the past 2 years haha.
A few of the aus birds only being year birds is because I did a bit of brief and frankly a bit abysmal giving my skill at the time (and probably even now..) birding visiting my sister in Sydney in late 2023, I can say I've seen that list in its entirety excluding Red-Whiskered Bulbul as I just wasn't bothered when I was in Sydney earlier this year (although I did at least visit JR the Long-Beaked Echidna at Taronga, even got to pat him!).
Anyways here's just the birds list:

Whups these weren’t lifers, brushturkey seen last time in Sydney, shearwater and noddy/ternlet (where I realised I forgot to correct the scientific name as I may have used some tools to expedite this process.. I’ve seen ofhad extremely good views of a vagrant Terek in the Ashley Estuary near Christchurch late 2024. Grey Plover and Greater Sand-Plover I picked up as vagrants in Auckland but at least for Grey Plover had much better views this year which was quite nice : )

93. Yellow-Billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes)
This was a lifer I forgot to bold tho, whoops! I hope this list is actually congruent with my lists now.. you can tell I was a bit rushed haha, on the car to Klalik at the moment : )
