Pretty much as the title says, which taxa have you added to your lifelist this year, both captive and wild? You can include domestic breeds if you like.
Oops, forgot one! That will make the total 61.Mammals - 60 new species
Gahh, I tried to get this species but ended up missing it both in the wild and in captivity...Tanuki
Do you know which one? This species has been split into Broad-toed Feathertail Glider and Narrow-toed Feathertail Glider.Feathertail Glider
I'm surprised to see this here! I thought the species was very common in US zoos?Eastern Grey Kangaroo
Were these at Ueno? If so, they've all been split into multiple species and the species status of Ueno's individuals is unknown, (hence why I left them as genus-level in my mammal post) as they are either confiscations from private keepers of unknown origin, or descended from such confiscated animals. It's possible they may be hybrids too.Sunda Slow Loris
Spectral Tarsier
Common Treeshrew

Wow, only 14??? 17 for Western is crazy too. Eastern Grey is probably the most common captive macropod in Australia by a long shot - I think you'd struggle to find an Australian zoo without either Eastern or Western greys. Red Kangaroo, at least in my experience, seems significantly less common in collections than the greys. What other macropods are kept in the US? Red-necked/Bennett's Wallaby is also pretty common in Australian facilities, as is Swamp Wallaby. In my area of northern Queensland, Agile Wallaby and Red-legged Pademelon are very common choices for macropod paddocks but I haven't seen either anywhere else in captivity. Not really! Zootierliste shows 14 US holdings, with many of them at unaccredited facilities I'm not familiar with. The western grey (which I have seen twice) is slightly easier to see with 17 mostly-accredited holdings, but neither grey holds a candle to the actually very common macropods like the red kangaroo (150) and red-necked wallaby (108). I guess ultimately it's something I could wind up stumbling across in the US eventually, but I'm not too surprised it hasn't happened yet. That said, you're now the second Australian I've spoken with who has vastly overestimated the prevalence of grey kangaroos kept in the US![]()
Oh sorry I got confused there - I was thinking iAs for the loris, what's the deal there? Like with the tarsier, it's certainly the only non-pygmy loris I've ever seen, so it was a new species for me regardless. But I'd love to know more if you're aware of any specifics.
Yeah it's a fairly recent split so I'd imagine all in captivity would have been exported from Australia under the name Acrobates pygmaeus. Even those in Australian captivity are not differentiated. Even if they were purebred species, telling the two apart is very difficult, essentially requiring having thr animal in-hand to examine the underside of the toe pads.Whichever one Saitama Children's Zoo has. They were simply signed as "feathertail glider (Acrobates pygmaeus)" but I'm assuming that's a pre-split designation that doesn't tell us anything.
Red kangaroo and red-necked wallaby are really the only super common ones. Off the top of my head, we also have common wallaroo, tammar wallaby, swamp wallaby, and Matschie's tree kangaroo (as well as brush-tailed bettong) in roughly similar numbers to either grey kangaroo. And then we have very few holders (<5 or so) for parma wallaby, agile wallaby, and yellow-footed rock wallaby. And that's it, unless I'm forgetting something that's the extent of macropods in the US. No pademelons or dorcopses or certainly no quokkas to be found. Of these, agile wallaby is the only one I haven't personally seen (although as mentioned, parma and eastern grey were both in Japan).Wow, only 14??? 17 for Western is crazy too. Nice list! Do note that all "Sugar Gliders" outside of Australia are not actually Petaurus breviceps following that species being split into several. 'True' P. breviceps are restricted to a small area of eastern and southeastern Australia, and the stock used to establish the international captive population was captured from Indonesia. The international captive population is probably Petaurus papuensis but it's hard to be sure. Will update this again closer to the end of December, but I thought I might as well send my vertebrate lists as they currently are.
