The small mammal house at Chester Zoo was built in 1960 and demolished in 1998 to make way for an extension of the elephant enclosure.
In 1983 the rear of the house was converted into a small nocturnal exhibit.
Several cages were built in 1967 to the south of the cat house, to house the jaguars which were thought unsuitable to be housed in the main cat house. They were demolished in 1985 to make way for the Axis Deer Enclosure.
