    Generic animals in lieu of extinct subspecies?

    I've been thinking of using generic ostrich in lieu of Arabian ostrich, and I'm wondering if something similar has been done in zoos already. Afterall, many large animal species exant today, such as lions and leopards, historically had much wider distributions than today.
