The second largest of the giant tortoise species, similar in size to their Galapagos cousins, only a little smaller, as they are found in the Aldabra Atoll of the Seychelles.

The most iconic giant tortoise of the very island that gave the famous Galápagos Islands it’s name.
As slow as the tortoises move and are herbivorous, it’s very astounding to think these tortoises can live up to 100 years of age. (Art originally drawn in September 2023 and redrawn for July 2024)
Its always cool to be able to capture animals in a way that you can see features that you wouldn't normally be able to, like the texture on the outer edge of the mouth here. Not 100% sure on the species ID, as the zoo keeps Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises in the same yard.
I really loved how the shell looked with those wet spots on it. I'm not 100% sure on the species ID since the giant tortoise yard has both Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises, but after watching a video about the differences the features of this individual best match Aldabra.
La Ferme aux Crocodiles has both Galapagos and Aldabra giant tortoises, so I'm not 100% sure which species this is. But I'm fairly certain it's the Galapagos giant tortoises
What (sub)species of Galapagos giant tortoise are kept in AZA zoos? Most zoos simply list there animals as Chelonoidis nigra. The only exception I could find is the Philadelphia Zoo which claims to have Chelonoidis nigra porteri and Chelonoidis nigra vicina.
Hi guys,
I'm trying to source a couple of sulcata tortoises for a petting zoo in the UK set up (a farm park with a zoo licence) we already have a variety of reptiles in our reptile house, meerkats and wallabies in the pipeline. But sulcata tortoises are our next project. Any help and guidance...
So I was chatting with TeaLovingDave in the chatroom and he decided to make my life more difficult by telling me that other Aldabra Giant Tortoise ssp besides the nominate keep popping up more and more in captivity:p
Now apparently there's a thread like this in the UK where it was worked out...
