'Wild' at Shamba Safari, Aug 10

Black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomys ludovicianus. In a shared exhibit with peccaries and porcupine, Burgers' Desert.

Poor prairie dog just trying to have a snack in peace. There's a lot of naturally occurring birds and small mammals that like to raid food from this enclosure, much to the chagrin of the prairie dogs, and to the amusement of the zoo visitors.

This enclosure always has really interesting shadows, and they are great tools for photography. I honestly have so many from this visit I really like but this is the shot that really stands out to me. I think the little flick of golden light on the face is very striking.

These guys give just an endless amount of great photo opportunities. My personal favorite animal to photograph at this zoo.

The zoo has baby prairie dogs just about every spring. They are super cute and its so fun to watch them interact with each other and the adult prairie dogs. Definitely make sure you don't miss out on them if you visit this zoo during the spring months.
