1.2 Warthogs?

Hello there! I'm hoping someone will be able to answer this question for me. I see comments around here often like "This zoo has 1.2 Warthogs" or "My ideal zoo would have lesser kudu (2.8)". Now I don't know if those are appropriate numbers are not; I'm just throwing them out there for the sake of the question. I am not familiar with some of the zoo terminology around the site and was simply wondering what this means! Could someone please help the n00b? :) Thank ya!
 
1.2 warthogs = 1 male and 2 females.

2.8 lesser kudu = 2 males and 8 females.

if there was 1.2.3 warthogs, it would mean 1 male, 2 females and 3 of unknown gender.
