With the 100th anniversary of the final passing of the passenger pigeon coming up I was thinking about the species and subspecies that had their last individuals living in zoos (passenger pigeons, Carolina parakeets, thylacines, quaggas, dusky seaside sparrows).
It made me wonder how many species/subspecies have their final individuals in captivity today.
What are the passenger pigeons of the 21st century?
I could only think of northern white rhinoceros and the Pinta Island Galapagos tortoise. Hopefully the Spix macaw can breed enough to escape the list, but seems like a potential candidate. I'm hoping that this is the entire list, but it probably isn't.
