I have 3 questions to which I hope some of you could possibly answer.

1 – Did the Scimitar Horned Oryx (Oryx dammah) ever breed in the UK?
2 – Did they Roan Antelope (Hippotragus equinus) ever breed in the UK?
3 – Which collections have Bred Hornbill’s successfully?

Many thanks in advance

1. Yes scimitar horned oryx breed regularly in the UK and Marwell Zoo keeps the studbook. (London Zoo bred the species way back in 1852.)

2. Yes roan antelope have bred in the UK; I believe they first bred successfully at Howletts.

3. A number of UK zoos have bred hornbill species including London, Whipsnade, Chester, Chessington, Paignton, Linton, Birdworld, Cotswold Wildlife Park and doubtless others too. Are you interested in any particular species or just hornbills in general?

Just hornbills in general as I find then very interesting and spend more time around them then any other bird species.

There’s a private breeder in Devon who breeds quite a few of the smaller hornbill species. Blyth’s Hornbills have bred at Paignton and Newquay Zoos, the same pair at both places.
