We just passed the 50,000 photo mark.

Here is what I wrote back on the 24th November 2008:

Just thought you might be interested to know that we have just passed the 20,000 photo mark in the gallery :D

It took:

766 days to upload our first 5,000 photos

107 days to upload our second 5,000 photos

42 days to upload our third 5,000 photos

79 days to upload our fourth 5,000 photos ... we slowed down a little - but then I also had the site offline for a while and the gallery was also down for some additional time.

Well done everyone.

That makes it 226 days to upload 30,000 photos

The 50,000th photo uploaded was probably this one from Calgary Zoo, uploaded by Ituri (see note below):

(note that due to deletions and non-zoo related photos in the gallery, this is not 100% accurate)

Is this the largest photo database devoted exclusively to zoos..?

I remember when I joined it was well under 2,000... You could view the whole lot in a few hours then..!

@NZJeremy: It's funny that you mention the fact that there was well under 2,000 photos when you joined, as I signed up at almost the same time as you and I can also remember there being very few photos. In comparison, during the past 6-7 days there have been over 2,000 photos uploaded! At the rate that ZooChat is expanding there could well be hundreds of thousands of photos one day. Your "bold prediction" of a million photos might be accurate, but I'm not sure that Sim has the space for everything.:)

There's always a way :D

More importantly is to try and find a more effective way of categorising them - having thousands of photos in one zoo gallery is a bit cumbersome.

Someone did suggest breaking each zoo down into sub-categories - many zoos have different precincts, often where they group animals from the same geographical area together. This might work - but I need to think through the implications of doing this.

What I would like people to start doing is using the tagging feature of the forum software to further classify photos (mostly by animal name) - this makes it easier for someone to then go and do a search for all photos of lemurs (for example).

how ironic on a website for zoos, or collections that focus on living animals, we have reached a milestone with an extinct animal

I was thinking about that Sim and maybe you could introduce a tab where the uploader must select at least one of the following before the photo is allow to be uploaded:

1). Taxinomically (Mammal, Avian, Amphibian, Reptile, Picses, then with a drop down for major groups, i.e. for Mammals, Bears, Canines, Felines, Hoofed species etc)
2). Biome (Rainforest, Desert etc)
3). Continent (not really aplicable for some species but for certain animals a good filter)

And/or have a compulsory species tag field..?
