For those of you in the USA who can get the internet television site Hulu.com, I found an old episode of Simon and Simon. The show (about two brother private investigators) has the following episode where they are hired by the zoo board to investigate the death of a lion keeper by one of the lions. The show is set in San Diego and it is supposed to be the San Diego Zoo, but it is clearly filmed on the grounds of the Los Angeles Zoo. There is also one scene, with one of the brothers in a grotto that a bear enters, that was filmed down the road at the old griffith park zoo (now a picnic area). For those of us who grew up with the Los Angeles Zoo in the 70's (that includes me), it is a fun nostalgiac look.

Good find. For those who can't watch Hulu in their country, there's also a copy on YouTube:

Incidentally, Simon and Simon is an 1980s show - 1981-1989 to be precise. That episode aired in 1981.

Thanks for the date clarification. I never actually watched it myself when it was on originally, so I was not sure of the time frame.

Was there really a gibbon on a wire with a chain attached to it at the LA Zoo in the 1970s or was that spliced in from somewhere else?

that was great!! I loved Simon & Simon when I was a kid.

Were the rainbow clown people who found the lion eating the keeper at the start representing San Diego Zoo volunteers - is that what they wore then? :D

I also liked the hard-hat pith helmets the Carnivore keepers were wearing; and there was a brief long shot of a female keeper wearing knee-high leather boots.
