Blackpool Zoo A new elephant house for Blackpool

Very nice to hear, I was sure Blackpool would end up going out of elephants like so many other places.
 
Why is everybody in Europe building for breeding herds? (And what about all those young bulls that will need accomodation?) For example, Osnabrück is waiting for a female herd since 2012, without having secured one so far. They are on top of waiting list in EEP, and the current situation can continue for years. Or is Blackpool planning to import from Asia?
 
The new regulations of EAZA & AZA for its members,call in general for at least 3 female elephants(idealy with relative bonds) or 2 male bull elephants!!

The recents succeses in breeding programs & early detection of herpes in calfs put the issue of managment of male elephants(above 5 yo)on the table!!

I suspect that the ''stock'' of male elephants will go(in pairs of two) to the zoo's that they dont want herds because of the cost of their managment.

Attica Zoo Park in Athens,a month ago brought two male 10 yo elephants that have lived together from their births.It its the first elephants that arrive to the park.
A new outdoor habbitat of....7000 m2(1.7 acres) the largest outdoor habbitat in EAZA for male elephants was put in place.

Is their any further news on the development of a new Elephant house? I was going to postpone a visit and wait until the elephant house was developed if work was going to start in the near future!

There's been no further post by BPZ but I doubt it'll happen any time this year- why not go anyway! See their baby zebra! :)

Reading through the site it seems as though Ground has been broken on the new site this week with it also mentioning that the Dino Safari will also get a revamp as part of the plans as well as a new food outlet.

It mentions that the plans for the old elephant house are for an Asian Tropical House and Rhino.
 
mayby its just the angle of the camera but the indoor bull area doesn't look very big. About the same size as what they currently have if they needed to separate kate from her main area?

Its very informative isn't it- you can see pretty much how it will all look when finished- good use of their website as you said. I hadn't really expected Blackpool to continue with Elephants, but they have- they have pretty much all the ABC animals on site, bar Hippos.

Thought Blackpool would have been better placed to rehome the lone elephant and concentrate on white rhino, given space available. Could have kept a couple of spp together in the same space and built a much smaller house. Rhinos would be easier to obtain then more asian elephants too.
Of course they would have needed to change the logo.

The plan is to home rhinos in the old elephant house enclosure and turn part of the house into a tropical house I believe, probably as an extension to Amazonia?

Now is this the long awaited Greater One Horned, that was outlined years ago?
 
Also are they hatching their bets showing both Asian and African Elephants in the mock ups of the exhibit?
