Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens A Rare Look At The Old And Some Of The Future

The original look of the "new" Los Angeles Zoo. The lake seen here, once teaming with many species of waterfowl, was drained some years ago. The land is now a part of the Pachyderm Forest construction site:

Design plans from 2004 of the Rainforest of the Americas. Scheduled to open in 2012, the finished design is now being prepared by the Portico Group:

And the once highly discussed Pride of LA lion habitat project, that seemingly has been pushed aside.

Good post. Does the LAZ still have those structures in the first picture? I've only been once and that was like 5 years ago. Is part of Pachyderm forest also open or something because I saw Sarus Crane pictures in the gallery.

Fantastic links - thank you so much! (I wonder what small zoos think when they see a figure of over $127 million for overall budget).

The Rainforest Of The Americas is what I am most excited about - especially if it looks anything like the drawings (underwater jaguar viewing). Their current jaguar exhibit is atrocious. The new scheduled completion date is Nov. 30, 2012. Really a shame, because this is two months too late. Why? Because in September 2012, the L.A. Zoo is hosting the annual convention of the Association of Zoo & Aquarium Docents. Roughly 1,000 docents from all over the U.S. will converge on the L.A. Zoo, and it is a pity that a premiere exhibit will be just short of opening.

No, the photo I took of the crane was taken from the fence stopping guest from entering. People could see the exhibit from the fence, but they can't really get near it. This was done to allow guests to see Billy while construction was going on.

The structure in the first photo is still there, but the spires are not. Treetops Terrace is soon to be demolished and will become a new events area along with a new Carousel.

Here is a photo of how Treetops looks now:

Arizona Docent, though the Rainforest may not be completed by then, they should still be seeing the completed Pachyderm Forest and Reptile, Amphibian and Insect Interpretive Center habitats. 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Of course, that's excluding any more unforeseeable delays.

You mean any more crazy far left liberals who "love" animals so much they think cows should all be released into the wild without realizing the wreck and havoc they have on the environment.

There's a reason Goldwater and McGovern never became president.

Anyways, the treetop terrace seemed pretty cool. Shame its being demolished and the spires are gone.

Are you saying Goldwater was a "far left liberal????"

If so, time to crack the history books again!

Thanks Mario. I've been waiting for a more detailed look of the center. A bit disappointed that they're talking about a delayed completion date now though. Instead of opening about 3 months after Pachyderm Forest, we're now looking at approximately a year later. Oh well, as long as they get it right and make it something special.
