A trip to Germany

I am thinking of planning a week or so trip to Berlin to visit the Zoo and Tierpark (probably in 2019).

Are there any other "must do" zoos within daytrip distance, by public transport, of Berlin? I know the sensible thing would be to move from one place to another rather that returning back to Berlin all the time but I am in need of hospital treatment every other day and it is difficult enough to arrange this using just one hospital. Berlin seems the obvious base with two days in each zoo.

The 2 that are arguably must see and within easy day trip distance from Berlin are Magdeburg and Leipzig. Leipzig is a highly (sometimes over)rated zoo about 2.5 hours away by ICE with a very complete collection (including pangolins), but also excessive theming in places. Magdeburg is a zoonerd delight with lots of rarities packed in an agreeable park and with the new elephant enclosure no real bad spots left anymore.

Then there is the "Welt der Gifte" (home of venom) in Greifswald, which is a small zoo owned by our own @Batto . Other zoos that might be worth thinking of are Eberswalde, Cottbus, Hannover and Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg. There are also two private small zoos/centres in the vincinity of Berlin where it might be possible to organize a tour: the ACTP, a parrot breeder which also keeps many other birds, including birds-of-paradise; and the Wildkatzencentrum Felidae which focuses on cats and small carnivores.

Home of venom sounds a bit snakey
I can't dissimulate that a few live snakes are part of the exhibition, but all of them are safely behind glass. Furthermore, there are plenty of other fascinating critters (Algerian ribbed newts, toads, scorpions, spiders etc.) and lots of fascinating & asthonishing things to see and learn in the World of Toxins. :)

I am scared of snakes behind glass too. But the other things sound interesting. Thanks for the English language link, my searching only found the German language website with a snake in the logo. o_O
