Adelaide Zoo Adelaide Zoo News 2024

Yi Lan and Xing Qiu have just left China and are now on their way. They will touch down in Adelaide early tomorrow morning.

Fantastic news! The exhibits haven’t needed any modification, so this has been a rather seamless transition between the departure of Wang Wang and Funi; and the arrival of Yi Lan and Xing Qiu.

May Yi Lan and Xing Qiu have better reproductive success than their predecessors!

The Giant pandas have arrived:

In the early hours of this morning, Giant Pandas, Yi Lan and Xing Qiu (pictured in his travel crate), landed at Adelaide Airport before making the journey across the city to Adelaide Zoo.

After a 15-hour journey from Dujiangyan, the pair are now now settling in to their new home and getting to know the Adelaide Zoo keeping team.

During this time, Bamboo Forest will be closed to the public while the pandas complete a mandatory quarantine period. Zoos SA expects the public will be able to catch their first glimpse of the panda pair in mid-January, once this period is complete.

An exciting new era for Giant Pandas, Adelaide Zoo looks forward to the next generation of South Australians to grow up with Yi Lan and Xing Qiu and sparking a love for their species and conservation into the future!

Giant panda update:

From socials:

Meet Xing Qiu and Yi Lan, Adelaide Zoo's newest residents!

These two adorable Giant Pandas are happily settling into their quarantine space at Adelaide Zoo, and already charming their keepers with their big personalities!

Yi Lan is a very confident and adventurous girl, who has been doing lots of exploring around the habitat. Xing Qiu is a bit quieter, content to take it all in his stride but doing his fair share of exploring - albeit at a bit of a slower pace than Yi Lan.

Keepers tell us that both pandas are enjoying the Adelaide-grown bamboo, and eating very well. Their quarantine area was designed with the different climates in mind, and is fully air conditioned and temperature controlled at a cozy 18 degrees.

These magnificent ambassadors are here to help us spread the message of conservation and inspire panda and wildlife lovers of all ages. They'll remain in quarantine until January, when we will re-open Bamboo Forest and hold an official welcome ceremony!

Amazing photos hey

Yes, we have some keeper footage too. The pandas are currently being kept in these highlighted areas:

Judging by the vision and photos that I've seen, I think Xing Qiu is located in den 1 & 2 (left side) and Yi Lan is in den 3 + 'The Nursery' (right side).

Yi Lan is particularly explorative and active. Each panda has access to two areas, with mobility between the each. They are separated physically by a passageway visible above. However, they can see each other!

This is some short footage of them from the media cameras.
