Hey Folks,

What African species do we have in Australia? I am only familiar with Werribee Zoo (zoo membership helps, given my location :D), so what other species are out there in addition to the ones listed off the top of my head? I was just thinking about what other animals might Werribee have access to in Australia.

Werribee Zoo

Meerkat
Lion
Serval
Cheetah
Painted dog
Dromedary camel
Scimitar-horned oryx
Plains zebra
Waterbuck
Kudu
Addax
Eland
White rhinoceros
Hippopotamus
Giraffe
Vervet monkey

Madagascan boa

Guinea fowl
African grey parrot
Ostrich

You missed out hippo.
Also black rhino
what about rainforest animals, eg bongo and colobus

Aren't there vervet or patas monkeys?

Hamadryas baboons.

I guess lemur species as well.

Fennec Fox
African Porcupine
Dwarf Mongoose?

Rainforest species like Jay said: Pygmy hippo, madrill, colobus, bongo.

Not too sure about reptiles, but maybe there are tortoises?

Egyptian Goose

Springbok, Nyala, Waterbuck are in NZ zoos and so theoretically obtainable by Werribee...

I still recommend becoming a ZAA member though Nanoboy, cos then you can just look at the zoos' censuses/censi, and see what they have got. Not sortable by species' geographic region of origin though....

Perth zoo has Hamadryas baboons who have recently moved into a new exhibit in the African safari area. Also spotted hyaenas and the usual meerkats.

Saw my first Waterbuck at TWPZ last week. Must admit I was amazed by how stunning an animal they are. I think Antelope are often under-rated.

Ah! Cheers!

To the other posters, thanks for your input.

I was just thinking that Werribee has no birds or reptiles on display, and maybe having some African species would be great. If said species were already in Australia, well, even better.
