After Christmas backyard birding

Lets have a little fun this coming Sunday. Spend a little time in your backyard and list the species of bird you see. With the worldwide membership we should get a heckofa list.

I'm fairly certain of the 8-9 I'll get, but I'm going to try to spend some more time and hit all 15 that hang around here. Being in a wooded patch within a heavily urban area means day-to-day variation is quite low, but always possible (grey hornbills and flamingoes have passed before!)

I recently saw Sandhill Cranes, Great & Snowy Egrets, a Little Blue Heron, Robins, Killdeer, & Turkey Vultures over the holidays.

Your general neighborhood will be fine. Maybe a nearby park iffen you live in an apartment building. Its just a fun thing to do, not going to be scientific or anything.

Some poor time planning landed me with a lot of work to finish this evening, so I didn't actually give this the kind of time and effort I'd hoped to (i.e. walking down to this abnormally productive sacred fig tree grove at the end of my street). BUT I did record everything that was outside my window + what I saw in the 15 minutes or so I got there.

1. Rock pigeon
2. Indian house crow
3. Indian jungle crow
4. Black kite
5. Rose-ringed parakeet - more than I've ever seen before, in a whole lot of what seemed to be mating pairs, including the ones that are roosting in a hole in my wall
6. Coppersmith barbet
7. Asian koel
8. Indian myna
9. Some kind of bulbul - the only one I wasn't fully sure I would see; it was too quick for me to identify whether white-vented or white-whiskered

That's a wrap! Pretty much all the regulars here, except purple-rumped sunbird. Other possibilities were golden oriole, a couple egrets/herons that come sometimes, and - I'm told - tailorbirds, a few flycatcher species, and magpie-robin. Never seen the last few.

My list seems so ordinary. I saw a few others in my little park but from my back yard
Costa's hummingbird
Northern mockingbird
verdin
ruby crowned kinglet
rock pigeon (their everywhere their everywhere)
house finch
white crowned sparrow
dark eyed junco

I just for went for a walk around my neighborhood park and I saw so many birds you're not going to believe it!!! ... I saw 3.
  1. American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos)
  2. House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
  3. Steller's jaw (Cyanocitta stelleri)

Hey, your "ordinary" is my "had-to-google" :P

This is what I saw in my neighborhood yesterday:

House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)
Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus)
Dark-Eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

I also heard American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), if that counts.

Well the results of the first annual After Christmas backyard birding extravaganza are in:

4.5 participants
19 identified species
7 auxiliary species
1 additional species heard
1 unidentified species

The growth rate for this annual event seems bright :)

Dang, if I'd been a little quicker/better with that bulbul we could have at least hit an even 20. Next year...
