Is anybody planning on attending?

Also

  • Where is the Russell Allen Lecture Hall?
Are you able just to go to the first part of the evening - The Zoo Review
Do you have chance to walk around any parts of the zoo?

I received my 2008 Chester Zoo Review today , very much a recession issue on thin paper . Personally , I am disappointed that , whilst there is a lot about the work on overseas projects , there is very little about the collection itself . No curators reports . Mention is made of the hand-rearing of Margaret , described as a Rothschild's giraffe .

A loss of £200k on total incoming v outgoing resources is reported . However , this includes spend of £894k on 'Natural Vision' . So the zoo itself still achieved a healthy surplus .

Mention of appendices on CD as usual , however the CD was not included !!

Same here Bele. No CD. I really think the zoo need to revise the presentation of the animal data. Like you, I prefer to read about the zoo itself not the society's overseas work.

LeeMac the Lecture Hall is to the west of the zoo. As you come off the roundabout on the A41, there is the second roundabout and the lecture hall is just on the left. I attended last year. I don't think it is possible to stay in the zoo until the meeting. I left after the zoo review last year, it's not compulsory to stay for the AGM. You will need your membership card to gain access to the lecture hall though.

The Annual Report and appendices are now available on the Zoo's web-site .

I will be attending the AGM but you will be surprised at how many of Chester members turn up or not as the case my be!!!!

I am yet to receive my copy of the Annual Review. I cannot attend myself for obvious reasons, but look forward to hearing of any news on plans and outlook for the future.

I am surprised to note that quite a few members object to the amount of reporting on overseas projects. If we are serious about our job as zoo educators and communicators, it is imperative zoos take up in situ conservation alongside their animal collection.

Chester Zoo by defnition does just that; have a marvellous animal collection and a complimentary in situ conservation programme. It is one of the Zoo's major strengths ... along with its environmentally friendly policy and hey ... in somewhat lean times it is allright to print on a lesser quality paper.

I am not objecting to the reporting on overseas projects at all , just very surprised at the almost total absence of reporting on the collection itself in the Review . After all it is CHESTER ZOO and , without the zoo and the animals , there would be no money to pay for the overseas projects .

I didn't get the CD either, but all the information is at:

Chester Zoo - 2008 with appendices

I agree with both Bele and KB. The annual report doesn't even give the usual reports from section heads and is very light on animal information generally. I think the main reason for the annual report is a statutory one for presentation of accounts etc and that is why that sort of dull information makes up most of the brochure. I do like to read about the overseas projects which Chester is supporting, most zoos pay lip service to conservation so it makes a change to see some concrete evidence.
