Almost a third (31%) of all lemur species in Madagascar are now Critically Endangered – just one step away from extinction – with 98% of them threatened, according to today’s update of The IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. This update completes a revision of all African primate assessments, concluding that over half of all primate species in the rest of Africa are under threat. This update also reveals that the North Atlantic Right Whale and the European Hamster are now both Critically Endangered.

Some changes are relevant to the zoo world.

For example, Golden-bellied Mangabey is now Endangered, and several macaques are Vulnerable. Both are bred in zoos, but there is little interest in them.

Thank you for sharing this with us. That is a shame. Why do you think that there is lack of interest from zoos in those species?

Aggressive, destructive, tender (needing warmth in temperate countries), dull in colour, dirty ( so needing a lot of keeper input) and ugly in the eyes of some/many... and out of 'fashion'?

I can understand the destructive and tender (needing warmth in temperate countries) being an issue, but the dull in color, ugly, and out of fashion aspects. That is in my opinion, absolutely no excuse for not keeping/working with macaques and mangabeys, especially for species that are endangered or threatened.
