Alpine swift is a species typical for Southern Europe. Larger than common swift. The most northern breeding site is in western Germany in cities like Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. It breeds in both mountain cliffs as well as on high buildings within cities.

The species is one of several Mediterranean bird/bat/insect species that is riding the coat of climate warming in Central Europe and is quickly colonizing new grounds. It goes also north along mountain ranges of Carpathians from Romania. Few year ago, it started to breed in several towns in Eastern Hungary.

Last year, first breeding was found on eastern side of Ukrainian Carpathians in town Kosiv.

Few birds have been observed also in Czechia, one was caught in central Prague last year. Breeding here is just a matter of time.
