Closed Animal Art gallery

Dear All Zoo Enthusiast ! Thank you to SIM that he eventually decided to create brand new photo gallery - The Animal Art gallery. Many zoos and aquariums are not only pure zoological collections but also are - to some extend - animal art museums. Unfortunately in the guide books or on the official web sites - photos of animal art are not so common. I hope so much that most of you will soon contribute to this gallery with many interesting and unusual photos.

Dear Zoo Enthusiasts !!! Unfortunately I see that "Animal Art Gallery" is not that popular among you as I thought it would (or it should). But anyway I want to recommend you to see the recent photo(s) added there by "mhale". I mean specially about the statue of Gerald Durrell at Jersey Zoo. I just wonder how many commemorative plates devoted to Gerlad Durrell and/or his statues are in the zoos all over the world??? I know about Miskolc Zoo in Hungary - some photos by "orycteropus" are here in Miskolc Zoo gallery (BTW - I hope that "orycteropus" will moved them to "Animal Art Gallery" soon!!). On the other hand it would be nice to find out about other statues or memorials of the famous zoo-men. (e.g there is a statue of Felix Rodrigues de la Fuente in Madrid Zoo, or commemorative plate of Mrs. P.O'Connor in Staten Island Zoo)

Not sure what you consider to mean "popular" ... there's 94 photos in that gallery already - I think that's a pretty good effort.

I'll try to take some pics this saturday at the LA zoo of it's animal art (the zoo doesn't have that much). The LA zoo is also going to put up some cool animal statues that they rescued from the old zoo (I think the statues are over 80 years old), so when they are up I'll take photos and upload them on the gallery.

There is a stone bust of Gerald Durrell in front of the Madagascar house at Pilsen zoo.

Of course you can regard this result as pretty good. But in my opinion it could have been better. Well, I like very much all kinds of animal art at the zoos and aquariums, and I think that all animal statues, monuments, murals and whatever else of that sort, make the given zoo/aquarium looks exceptional. The lion (or the giant panda, or okapi, or any other animal) looks pretty much alike irrespective where the photo was taken in Tokyo, Berlin or Buenos Aires. Of course I know that not all of zoo-goers or zoo-enthusiats should share my opinion but in spite of all I expected greater response.

If you like (animal) statues in a zoo, then Tierpark Berlin-Friedrichsfelde can be only recommended-there are so many of them distributed all over the zoo that you might not find all of them in one visit.

Be patient, @fanaloka-your favourite gallery will get the attention it deserves sooner or later.

I go to the zoo to watch and photograph the animals not the statues

The only photo's I have of "animal art" there are family or friends adjacent to them, so I would never consider uploading to this site.

Dear "taun" - I think that nobody wants to restrict your rights to go to the zoo only to see animals and to photograph them. I guess that you apparently share the opinion that zoos are only for animals. Well it is your point of view. I always perceived zoos as cultural and social establishments and my not so controversial as it might sound opinion is that zoos are for people to the same extend as are for animals. The wellbeing of zoo visitors is as much important as wellbeing of the animals kept there. And when I go to the zoo it is of course importnat what species of animals I can see there but not less important are clean toilets, good food, places to rest, clean footpaths and aslo all other things such as animal statues, monuments etc.! And I addressed my thread to other people who like not only live animals but animals in art as well.

I never said anything against you I just mentioned the main reason why I visit zoo's (not the only one). I agree facilities have to be of an okay standard. I have small daughter, the access and facilities are disgusting in zoos in the UK at least.

I also highlighted why I don't upload my "animal art" photo's, to show that people may take an interest but may have other reasons as to why they do not post them on a public forum which anyone can access.

OK. I hope one day you will have the chance to take a good shot of some zoo/aquarium animal art and then you will upload the photos in this gallery.

Yes, of curse I very like all kinds of animal art at zoos and public aquariums. Living in Wroclaw I am closer to Berlin then to our capital city Warszawa. So I am usually twice or even three times a year in Berlin and of course I know very well Tierpark Berlin. Yes, you are right it is hard to find all the statues and monuments in Tierpark. In 1980 they edited the booklet: Der künstlerische Schmuck des Tierparks Berlin, by H.Dathe, in which most of the art in Tierpark is described.

@fanaloka: How many statues (including the various human nudes) have you counted in Berlin? Last time I tried, I ended up with about 60. – Honestly speaking I have never tried to count them. In the booklet I mentioned previously (Der künstlerische Schmuck des Tierparks Berlin, by H.Dathe, 1980) there are b/w photos of 56 different sculptures. But since then some new were apparently added (e.g. this dog is relatively new I guess). Speaking about nude humans statues – as far as I can remember at least some are i.a. in Rostock Zoo. I saw also an interesting exposition of different “African” (or African inspired) sculptures during Summer 2008 in Krefeld Zoo. I do not know if this was temporary exposition or will stay forever in Krefeld.
Im American zoos, series production seems to have reached zoo art, too; I have seen the very same statues of Tom Tischler in several zoos
Tom Tischler Bronze (Tom Tischler Bronze) – Yes I know this pages. Do you know the another one which is Bronze Casting, African and Animal Sculpture, Hamish Mackie, Oxfordshire - it is a litlle bit more interesting as there you can find prices. So go on and see. They vary from 2000.00 GBP up to 40000.00GBP (to make all clear from two thousands to forty thousand British pounds !!!).
If you like Zoo & Art, this might interest you:
http://www.zoochat.com/2/frank-bonifay-zoo-55763/ - I know Frank Pe in person. Recently we met here in Wroclaw in September 2008. I like his drawings but honestly speaking I am not an enthusiast of all this story told in the “frank-bonifay” books.

@fanaloka: German wikipedia mentions about 65 statues for Friedrichsfelde; seems as I have to count again next time.;) I think the statues in krefeld are there to stay.

In former times, TT also had a price list added. I think I've seen one or two of Mackie's statues, but I wasn't completly smitten by them.

Yeah, the story in the graphic novels can be a bit odd sometimes, yet I still admire and appretiate the artwork in them.
