I found this interesting DVD at my local HMV, Animal Nation: Congo in the Bronx, the gorillas of the rainforest in a concrete jungle follows the construction of this exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. it's only 50 minutes, I could have watched 50 hours of footage but it was a nice surprise to find.

I believe that this is the same show broadcast in the US for several years under the title "20th Century Zoo."

This was also shown on National Geographic a few years ago. It was really good and I agree 50 hours of footage would have been great :)

The other titles in the series aren't about zoos but it seems there is one about Javan rhinos which looks amazing. i think it's made by a New Zealand company

Actually there are more than 50 hours. The film crew was there for weeks. Their first cut was very different from the final version.

That would be cool to see, I especially liked the behind the scenes bits with the okapis. A film like this on every major exhibit would be amazing...

Will need to see this. The problems with living "down under"
