I would suggest inter-library loaning the Handbook of the Birds of the World or Handbook of the Mammals of the World both published by Lynx Edicions in Spain. You can pay $30 for a year's subscription to HBW Alive though. Both sets of books include the latest taxonomy and have wonderful illustrated plates. There are great herpetology, icthyology and insect books out there as well. You just have to look.
