a quick question.

Whereabouts at Colchester(I know the layout) are the enclosures nowadays of the Gelada Baboons and the Red Capped Mangabeys?

What species can only be seen from the Miniature Tran Ride?.

you can see all the species without going on the railway, and the gelada baboons are near the seals you cna see it fro mthe bird of prey area and the red capped managbeys are opposite sasha (is that the correct monkey?)

Sasha is the white tiger - the mangabeys are opposite him (the previous lion enclosure, I think?).

And as of May this year the Black-backed Jackals were only visible from the train.

oh ok ty with sasha and if you look good enuf from the hunting dogs enclosure you can see a odd back but its best to go from train.

Actually, that's true - you can just about spot a jackal from across the wild dogs if you know where to look (and if the animals are in the right spot), but you're much better going by train.
 
Agree you can really only spot the jackals properly from the train. It's also often true that you get a much better look at the wolves from the train as well and can certainly appreciate the size of their enclosure better from it.

You can get to the Geladas 2 ways. Firstly, by walking behind the new Meerkat enclosure, or alternatively, by approaching via the 'wobbly bridge' which takes you over the top of the lemurs. If you don't know already, this is accessed from the corridor with the anteaters on one side, and Sasha on the other, with the otters & silverleaf monkeys also right near its entrance.
 
I agree that seeing the Jakals and the wolves is much more fun on the train:D.

The Gelada Babboon enclousure was also the old Rhino paddock.

I don't think thats correct! For starters Colchester Zoo actually opened in 1963 obviously not 50 odd years ago.

I belive the 2 older White Rhinos were the origanal Rhinos. Flossie has been at Colchester since 1972 longer than all the other animals. In my 1970s broshe the Rhino paddock was on the site of the Gelada Babboon enclosure. The 2 Rhinos looked fairly small in the broshe. The place your're thinking of is around about the area of the origanal Girafes' outside yard.
