For those of you who don't know about Franklin Zoo, it is a privately owned zoo/wildlife sanctuary located about half way between Auckland and Hamilton. Because of this, none of their animals are involved in breeding programmes. Most animals at Franklin Zoo are either excess animals from the main zoos of New Zealand, or retired circus animals. Some of the enclosures aren't the best, and as it runs mainly on money from admission and donations from generous members of the public and businesses, they don't have a lot of money. So I would encourage you all to pay Franklin Zoo a visit, especially before their African elephant departs. They have some great ideas for new enclosures and exhibits, they just need donations to make those a reality.
Photos to come soon.
