In the UK, I know of the following species that have been kept, and a rough estimate of the price:

Guinea pigs-£30 for both of mine, (From Pets at Home!)

Trumpeter hornbill-£300 for juvenile male

Rhea-£900 for 2.3 (Two grey males, two grey females and white female)

Schalow's turaco-£275 each

Fischer's turaco-£300 each

White cheeked turaco-£100 each

Cinnamon white cheeked turaco-£120 each

Buffon's turaco-£150 each

Black billed turaco-£300 each

Violet Turaco-£175 each

Eclectus parrots cost about au$700. My grandad had a hand reared female and a male that wasn't so they never bred but now he is looking for a new female.
And my guinea pigs were free
 
In the U.S. there is a place called Emerald Forest Bird Gardens whic keeps, breeds and sells a large variety of toucans, toucanets and aracaris.
They have a brilliant website - lots of information and photos. (Google it!)

Wow!

Looked at their website, the owner has apparently breed 12 toucan/aracari species in captivity for the first time, that a pretty good record for a private breeder:D

Toucans and Aracaris is really something I would like to have down here, increadibly beutiful, almost a bit like hornbills, smaller and more colourful. We do have some species here but its not many, 5-6 at most but they are very expensive. I see pairs or immature for sale occasionally down here, mostly Ramphastos ambiguus or Ramphastos toco and is usually bought by fanatics from Japan for 140000-160000 bath.
 
I think you'll find that in the UK, Europe and USA pretty much anything can be bought and kept. Even highly endangered and protected species are often openly traded.
 
Although many species are available to UK private keepers - especially reptiles and amphibians (which can be imported with little restriction from Europe) and, to a lesser degree (now the wild-caught import ban has been implemented), birds - the list of EASILY available mammal species is pretty limited.

There are moves afoot to illegalise the private keeping of certain CITES 1 listed species. This seems a little unneccessary considering that there are already strict regulations in place for such animals and such laws won't stop any illegal activities that may already be taking place.
 
About 20 years ago my brother and I went to buy some nest boxes and the dealer asked what kind of birds we were interested in. Om being told parrots he said he could import anything we asked for.

I asked him about the CITES forms and he said it didn't matter. The police were informed, but they never got back to us.
 
In South Australia we have very good laws regarding the keeping of Native Wildlife. the only animal we are not allowed to keep are Koalas (both ssp) and Dingoes but 99% ush of the other native species require a permit to keep them.

In theroy someone with the exp and resoning could keep a Tree Roo, they just have to be able to get it!

We are nto allowed exotics other than Birds or Fish and Domestic mammals
 
In NSW it is the opposite almost, can only keep dingoes (without a permit) and hopping mice and bush rats (with a permit). Very tough.

Hornbill. . . 30 pounds for two guinea pigs??? that's like AUS $90. can get them here for about 10 bucks or 3 - 6 pounds
 
In QLD we are not allowed any exotics except for domesticated animals, certain bird species and most exotic fish species. Also you need a permit for every single Australian animal you can get which is only reptiles, amphibians, birds and small mammals like hopping mice. So sad we cannot have exotic reptiles!
