Mammals in NZ Zoos
For the 'Big Four' NZ Zoos, this is a list of species being deleted and acquired, according to the ZAA. Does not include species already present within a zoo that are likely to be supplemented from elsewhere.
Auckland Zoo:
Delete:
Parma Wallaby
Grey-headed Flying Fox
Bonnet Macaque
Chimpanzee
Orang-Utan Hybrid
Sumatran Orang-Utan
Californian Sea Lion
These are mostly listed as delete by attrition, so they are not likely to be sent elsewhere or disappear in the immediate future. If impala are imported they will replace springbok probably. The bonnet macaques are the last left in Australasia (at least in ZAA zoos), and the zoo is trying to get rid of them I think, not sure how easy export will be, and no ZAA zoos in NZ will take them, but could go somewhere private.
Acquire:
Pygmy Marmoset
Fishing Cat
Bornean Orang-Utan
Impala
Lowland Nyala
Bornean Orang-Utans are unlikely to arrive anytime soon, see other threadds about this, and this will not occur until the sumatrans go. The others are also unlikely to occur in the next few years, as the zoo focuses its resources on the NZ section and Elephants.
Hamilton Zoo:
Delete:
Asiatic Golden Cat
Nilgai
Sitatunga
The cat may be sent elsewhere, the antelope are unlikely to go, but are maintained as non-breeding and will not be replaced. The nilgai are quite old I think.
Acquire:
Pygmy Marmosets
African Lion
Meerkat
Lowland Nyala
Waterbuck
African-crested Porcupine
Capybara
These are mostly long-term goals, but the meerkat and porcupine are listed as to be acquired in 2010, so may arrive soon.
Wellington Zoo:
Delete:
Eastern Grey Kangaroo
Brown Spider Monkey
Collared Peccary
Blackbuck
All to be deleted by attrition, only blackbuck found elsewhere in NZ, so bit of a shame to loose them, especially the roos. Although at the zoo there is a sign about an Australian precinct development which will include wallabies and kangaroos, so maybe they've changes their minds?
Acquire:
Tasmanian Devil
Common Wombat
Impala
Blesbok
Himalayan Tahr
Tahr will be arriving in the near future to live in the current sun bear exhibit when the bears move into a new exhibit in the old giraffe paddock, presumably they will be wild caught. The tahr will overlook the new NZ section, as they are an introduced species in the Southern Alps. Australian animals will presumably arrive when the Australian section gets built, Impala when/if they get imported, and Blesbok are probably wishful thinking, I can't see them ever arriving.
Orana Park:
Delete:
Addra Gazelle
African Crested Porcupine
The gazelle is the last one in NZ, possibly Australasia, while the porcupine is a different species (same common name) to the other porcupines held in the region, which Orana also holds.
Acquire:
Red Kangaroo
Tasmanian Devil (2011)
Arabian Camel (2011)
Snow Leopard (2012)
Sun Bear (2014)
Western Lowland Gorilla
Spotted Hyaena
Brown Bear
The gorillas are 'under consideration', as are the hyaena and brown bear, but only if management programme developed (unlikely). Would be cool to have camels back in NZ, and snow leopards would also be exciting. Chances of the leopards and sun bears arriving in listed years is low though, but should happen within the next 5-6 years hopefully.
