This aquarium is located on Pier 39 in San Francisco and focuses on the diversity located in and around the San Francisco Bay.
Aquarium of the Bay
The aquarium originally opened in April 1996 as Underwater World...the first in a chain of aquariums built by US Aquarium Team, Inc. Other Underwater World aquariums opened in the Mall of America in Minnesota and on the island of Guam. The Pier 39 aquarium in San Francisco has seen many owners over the years. The aquarium itself covers 50,000 sq feet, and holds about 700,000 gallons of water.
Recently the aquarium's new owner the Bay Institute, a nonprofit organization, completed its purchase of the facilities and will continue to transform the formerly built tourist attraction into a local aquatic institution.
