Are Koalas Endangered Species?

I think the situation is that are locally rare in some places, over abundant in others and stable populations at risk in others. Here in South East Queensland a formally abundant population has been dropping dramatically as there habitat has been overtaken by urban development. As to the species as a whole I'm not sure.

not sure bout the species as a hole but was on the news note long ago about koala populations in decline and the clamidia virus was also metioned as being a big problem.

Along the Murray river there is a large and expanding population along a 60km strech near Tocomwal. This population was fairly safe but most the Vic side is being made national park and now it could all burn in one day. The forests have in the past been well managed to keep fires to a minimum and are very healthy. Now cattle have been removed and the management will be changed.

I often take visiters who want to see Koalas down to the river and we usually only have to walk about one km to see 10.

yeah it is like that at port macquarie there are a fare few koalas up there , but i quess in other places they just arnt going so well

Koalas are NOT endangered, despite Koala enthusiasts trying to convince people otherwise. As mentioned, some populations are declining due to habitat fragmentation and urban encroachment, but other populations are on the increase. Every few years the Koalas on French island in Port Phillip Bay are culled (captured) and translocated to the mainland and released in areas formerly populated by them. Koalas were introduced to Kangaroo Island many years ago but have flourished there.

its worth pointing out that this is because like kangaroo island, the french island population is also introduced. it also has the distinction, so i'm told, of being the only chlamydia-free wild population in australia.

i think action needs to be taken now with koalas, so we dont see a similar situation as we are seeing with tassy devils. the chlamidia virus seems to be becoming a fret to them.

Most wild Koalas have Chlamydia but it doesn't cause them any problems. But when they become stressed, the disease manifests itself and the koala becomes ill.
