Are there people on Zoochat primarily into Herps???

I'm quite keen on herps, the college I studied at had quite a range of species. I myself have Spotted Salamanders, Leopard Geckos, Giant African Land Snails and a Praying Mantis... as well as fish and a dog. I also work in a fish and herp pet shop.

And MD, where are Leopard Geckos on show at Marwell? Have I missed them tucked away somewhere?

They, along with the corn snakes, rainbow boas, box turtle and clawed toads are in the Science & Learning Centre. The exhibition aren't always open to the public though and I see them more often because our oryx club meetings are held in there, so I guess they're semi on-show if you know what I mean.

Same here, but then they are frequentley kept as pets nowadays, as is the case with me too. :)

A little late but........

I am a herp freak. Most of the zoos I go visit is more to check out the reptile houses than anything else. Just a hobbiest though I am an auto mechanic by trade. Main interest are lizards mostly from the desert regions of the world. Now I keep about 30 Sauromalus ater a pair of Uromastyx ornata philbyi and a Cyclura lewsi hybrid. Just sold my collection of Ctenosaura which included yellow pectinata, oedirhina, melanosterna, bakeri and palearis. The melanosterna and oedirhina were imported from the Netherlands and Germany respectively.

I love visiting zoos to check out the enclosures. Typed in "zoo enclosures" on google and came accross this site which is excellent! Jersey Lotte has really intrigued me more with the site. I have always dreamed of visiting Jersey. I remember as a kid watching "The Stationary Ark" and "Ark on the Move". Those shows have never escaped my memory. I think I have read just about every Durrell book over and over. I have also been in contact with Matt Goetz at Jersey regarding the US population of Ctenosaura bakeri. Hopefully soem day I will make it to Europe and the UK to visit the great zoos there. Anyway just wanted jump in here as it is a subject I love.

Hey, welcome to the forum :D

Hey Mark you are a lucky guy! Australian lizards are the best! I was one of the first to breed Pagona vittaceps here in the US back in the early 90's. Now there are millions of them here LOL. What species do you keep?

I keep Herps of the native kind with a strong interest in Lizards

I'm always jealous of you Australians. You have so many awesome native herps. Huge crocs, pythons and varanids. Sounds like heaven. I keep an ackie right now. They are terrific little lizards.

I'm definately a herp person. I'm particularly interested in varanids. I've been drawn to them ever since I saw my first nile monitor at the Columbus Zoo when I was 8 years old. I don't care how common certain species may or may not be, they are all fascinating to me. I also am interested in teids and uromastyx.

I also enjoy seeing different crocodilians. It seemed like all you saw in Midwestern and Northern American zoos for the longest time were American Alligators, various caiman species, West African Dwarf crocs and the occaisional Chinese alligator. Seeing some of the huge species more and more is fun. Gharials make any zoo interesting to me. There also seem to be a few more places (Philly, Bronx) keeping nile crocs these days. The one in the Bronx is pretty massive.

There are a couple of "holy grail" species that I am dying to see one day. Those would be perentie monitors, lace monitors, gray's monitors and mugger crocodiles. Muggers are one I've not ever seen that are almost unheard of here in the States.
I'm also a big fan of watching caiman lizards diving at the Shedd.
