Armadale Reptile Centre in southern Perth have announced on social, they are mourning the euthanasia of their 23 year old male southern hairy-nosed wombat, Bluey. He arrived at the park in August last year from nearby Adventure World (wildlife park section thats been closed down now). Bluey unfortunately had osteoarthritis in his stifles (knees) and cataracts. Their posting about his treatment for was actually of considerable length (longest instagram post have ever read) so they really tried everything for his treatment to try give him extension of his life that was comfortable and as pain-free for him as possible naturally.
They set him up a den burrow with warm blankets and a heater going full time during the duration of this last winter, and on the sunnier days lately he was placed in a trolley and wheeled back over to his outdoor enclosure to be able to have time basking in the sun. The vets of Unusual Pets Vets in Murdoch, Perth assisted him, and he was given the strongest pain relieving medications he could be given that didnt risk adverse side effects. Even physio therapy by another vet and the use of CBD oils. When he went off eating his food though and started to lose weight, his keepers concerns grew. He had a final CT scan organised with the WA Wildlife and Animalius Vet. Unfortunately he wasn't able to fully recover from his increasing conditions with any prognosis of being able to get by without the discomfort (increasing imagine would of been the case with perhaps), and the tough decision was made. It's the longest message of announcing the passing involving having to be euthanised, have read before detailing treatment to try and save him. He was clearly very loved by his keepers and other staff there (one of his vets has also written to them saying what a wonderful little fella he was).
