Is there hope for the Asiatic black bear in North American zoos? According to ISIS there are only 12 zoos on the continent that have this species of bear in their collection, and there are only 17 bears in total. There are almost as many giant pandas as there are Asiatic black bears! I've heard before that this species is being phased out of all collections, and even though I've visited over 50 North American zoos I've only ever personally seen these bears at the Denver Zoo and Miami Metrozoo.

Zoo Programs: The existing North American captive Asiatic black bear population is an unknown, with few animals, many of varying subspecies, and is considered unsuitable to manage for genetic success. It is the recommendation of the AZA Bear Advisory Group that these animals not be bred and the space left by these animals be used for AZA Species Survival Plan bears. CBSG has recommended that Japan concentrate their conservation efforts on this highly endangered bear species.
Asiatic black bears now in North American zoo collections should be used for contraceptive trials to benefit all bear species. Woodland Park Zoo and the USFWS forensics laboratory are working together on a genetic analysis of the North American population. All medical and necropsy reports should be sent to the AZA Bear Advisory Group veterinary advisor for future reference. Zoos holding Asiatic black bears should stress the educational message of the impact of illegal hunting and the trade of bear parts to the Asian medicinal market.

We have one here in Boise.

It is a shame that Asiatic black bears are being phased out, but on the other hand, if more critically endangered species like sloth and sun bears are helped out because of this move, then more power to AZA and the international zoo community for their recommendations.

As part of the sloth bear SSP, Zoo Boise sent the sloth bear they had on exhibit to Seattle, which necessitated a move of their twin boy sloth bears to Lee Richardson Zoo, who then needed a place to send their Asian black bear. So the long and the short of it is, Zoo Boise is participating in the sloth bear SSP by housing an Asian black bear.

Many of the Asian Black bears are in non-AZA facilities and they are breeding quite often. As far as the SSP for Sloth Bears does anyone know where the 17 from Smoky Mountain Zoological Park have gone? I know maybe a couple were sent to San Diego and there large Manchurian but i'd like to know where the sloths and spectacled bears went. Thanks for any info!
