Australasian Cheetah Population

This thread aims to record the population of Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) within the Australasian region. Only four Australasian zoos have successfully bred cheetah in recent times: Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Monarto, Orana and the National Zoo and Aquarium. There have been several imports of Cheetah directly from South Africa especially from Cango Wildlife Ranch and the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, both to meet the demand for ambassador and breeding animals. Another recent import involved the arrival of four (3.1) siblings from Hamerton Zoo, UK in 2017 led by Darling Downs Zoo. Several of the new holders like Tasmania Zoo and Sydney Zoo have also received locally bred animals following the good breeding success from the past five years. In saying this the last time a cheetah was successfully born in the region was in 2018. Another holder of cheetah is also expected soon; Hamilton Zoo, NZ is due to receive 4.0 Cheetah this year from Dubbo.

Note: this species has the fortune of having an international studbook that is released publicly on an annual basis ensuring a reliable source to be used for the regional population. Corrections/further information is welcomed and appreciated.

King Cheetahs: The region currently has two King Cheetah which are included in the list below - sisters Halla and Kyan (2009). They were born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and have produced several litters at Dubbo. [italics = King Cheetah]

Would it be possible to high light the King Cheetahs in some way? :)

Is Tasmania a new holding? I didn't come across them in the studbook. I have a map put together with all of the current holders (missing any non-US holders outside the studbook, working on it), and I'm working on documents showing all of the exhibits and cats worldwide. I have Oceania done already.

Yes, Tasmania Zoo received their two females in January 2020 from Monarto. There have been a few other changes since the 2019 studbook was released including Symbio's new females from Dubbo and Mogo's new females from Monarto. There have also been a few deaths at Monarto as well (hence why they currently don't have any males to my knowledge).

Monarto's website says they still have males, but then again it also says the have 15 cats and the numbers add up to 10. I caught Mogo's new girls, but missed those other changes. Thanks :)

No problem. I wouldn't trust Monarto's website it's quite outdated. :)

Monarto's breeding male Saadani died last year and the other male that the website mentions, Obi is now at the new Sydney Zoo. They also brought in another male, Lion (renamed Leo) late last year from Symbio but he also died unexpectedly like Saadani. Saadani died in November and Lion/Leo in December.

I had noticed Lion's name! So Symbio just has the two girls, then?

Since AZ have so many imported Cheetah it seems a shame none are being bred. I believe they are housed more or less in the tiger complex?.

I feel since they have had the species for some time now they should have their own exhibit space on view to the public since the entry price is quite high.

Also I could never work out why the zoo have/had mentioned about they have under water viewing for the Cheetah? ;)

I believe the underwater viewing is a reference to their occasional visits to Tiger Temple; however, they would have no use for the pools like you say!

Australia Zoo have nailed the requirement for breeding to provide the females with multiple males to choose from; but housing them so close to apex predators like tigers will heavily hinder any attempts to breed.

So a Cheetah only exhibit would be ideal for them and the public! :)

The 2020 International Cheetah Studbook was finally released in January and mentioned the following notable developments relevant to this thread. There were not many changes from the original list and updates above. Not including Kamo’s cheetah, the region had 70 (34.36) cheetahs across 16 facilities as of December 2020:

1.0 Kaha at Orana Wildlife Park died on 31st January 2020.

The male cheetah that were recently imported by Canberra from South Africa were born on 29th October 2020 at Cango Wildlife Ranch.
