Australia Zoo Number Two!

Is there currently any sort of zoo in Las Vegas, i know there is an aquarium attraction at Mandalay bay, and that ridiculous big cat habitat at MGM.

“We're just going to have wombats and platypuses and koalas and crocodiles. I'm a big crocodile fan. I love crocodiles. So it's my kind of zoo.”

Are they actually going to have platypuses?! Or is this just the mayor waffling?

If they actually HAVE platypuses there, that alone would make it worth going out of the way to see! But I too have my doubts. I thought it was the Australian government that would keep them from bringing in platypuses (or koalas, or any other rare Aussie species).

I feel Australia zoo should focus on the zoo they now have, the many plans about having a great collection of animals seems to have slowed almost to a stop, what happened to the worlds largest Gorilla exhibit?, where are the planned Orangs?, whats has happened to the Lemur Island?, Having visited in Febuary there are still very few exotic animals there?, so why worry about another zoo overseas when this one is FAR complete

They would make far more money in Las Vegas than they would in Oz. Therefore spend a little to make a lot more mentality is being used here, hopefully the funds would then be used to expand and create the plans they have back in Oz.

Sounds to me like money may be drying up, they've been a while without a star attraction.

what about the elephants?

they have spent all this money on an elephant exhibit for three 50-something year olds and i don't think there are any guarantees that they will be getting elephants from taronga or melbourne any time soon.

Blackduiker

Ooops, yes there is, but from the look of the website, nothing to write home about, maybe except (according to their website)the last group of Barbary macaques in the USA.

Las Vegas Zoo Visitor Information

The worst zoo I've ever visited bar none! With all the money in this town they should be ashamed of their zoo. In one word, CRUDE! And they're literally surrounded by thousands of acres of desert land so there is plenty of space for a first class facility.

Is it just me that thinks having an Irwin zoo in the states would seriously impact on the numbers at the real Australia Zoo??

The biggest fan base of irwin family comes from the states. If the Irwins are over there for half the year why bother coming to Australia to see them or their native animals? especially when Taronga or Melbourne have so much more to offer.

i think australia zoo have made a number of BIG mistakes whilst establishing their zoo.

the first one was not taking up an opportunity to acquire a large number of zoo animals that are unlikely to ever become available to them. they passed on an offer to buy rhino, hippo, pygmy hippo and a number of other exotic ungulate species. all species that currently cannot be imported into australia.

they, by a stroke of bad (or good) luck then had a second opportunity to buy many of the same animals. this time included was various primates and big cats that australia zoo didn't display. again australia zoo passed.

they then built a very expensive permanent elephant exhibit - when they only had very elderly animals.

finally, after acquiring some lemurs, marmosets, rhino and other animals through other ARAZPA institutions. they kept them ALL OFF DISPLAY

and lastly. they have failed to reidentify themselves after steve irwins death. a bad marketing mistake.

moving operations to the US just might be the best thing terri ever did.

but i question the environmental ethics of building a water-hungry crocodile attraction in the middle of the desert.
