16 month sentence for egg smuggler

A 53-year-old Western Australia man has been found guilty and sentenced to 16 months imprisonment for attempting to smuggle parrot eggs into Australia.

Mr Kevin Gledhill pleaded guilty in the Perth District Court earlier this month, and was convicted of importing eggs into Australia contrary to Regulation 303CD of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.
He was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment with a minimum of eight months to serve.

Customs and Border Protection Director Operations Investigations, Virginia Lynch, said this was a good result and others should take heed from Mr Gledhill’s conviction and sentencing.

“If you attempt to smuggle wildlife into Australia you are committing a serious crime.”

"If caught offenders may face investigation, prosecution and penalties including gaol time," she said.

“Customs and Border Protection continues to investigate and prosecute wildlife smuggling attempts into and out of Australia in a bid to end this cruel practice”,

Customs and Border Protection officers stopped Mr Gledhill at Perth airport on 6 September 2009 arriving from Bali.

During a baggage examination, officers became suspicious that the man was concealing prohibited items under his clothing. Further examination revealed the man was carrying 37 parrot eggs concealed in a specially made vest.

It didn't say, so I guess we don't. But presumably the smuggler knew what they were, and told Customs. They just didn't report it in the article.

Parrot Smuggling

Well, in the eyes of the law, he deserves it. I also have known personality, in fact he is a Chief of Police is Southern Palawan, Philippines who allegedly illegally exporting different kinds of rare parrot species including talking mayna.

No one has the strength of a lion to complain since this man is also knwon for having a license to kill ( valor awardee).

We still hoping that this kind of illegal business may call the interest of high authorities.

Thanks

craftsmaster,

Can you please elaborate. Is this WA incident related to illegal exporting to/from the Philippines?

Case: Smuggling of Parrot

Facts: A month ago, more or less 700 parrots are taken out of the Philippine Country. This group of police officer headed by Chief of Police (COP) of southern Palawan, Philippines illegally took the 700 parrots from alleged illegal group of people. They usually operate during night time and deliver the items to other parts of the country before the sun raise which is subsequently then deliver outside of the country. I'm not particular of the country but i believe it goes to the nearby state.
