Re-examination of a hundred-year-old fossil originally identified as the eagle Taphaetus lacertosus has found that it is actually an Old World vulture, the first ever recorded in Australia, which has been named Cryptogyps lacertosus (powerful hidden vulture).
This vulture was similar in size to the modern wedge-tailed eagle and lived in the late Pleistocene - its discovery has helped solve the mystery of what happened to the bodies of the Australian megafauna after they died.
