On my visit today i was thrilled to see the baby gibbon out in the enclosure with it's mother.
It's about 5 weeks old now and was kept quiet because it's the first success they've had with the pair
Male Rothchilds Girraffe coming from South Lakes very shortly, he's 8 years old
Lionesses arriving Tuesday 17th November from Twycross Zoo they will be resident at Dudley so will not be returning to Twycoss.
The orangutang house is coming along now with the roof now completed at the rear and the back wall now under construction.
The black Lemurs were out in Lemur Wood for the first time.
Will be going back on 19th November so if you would like any questions asked or photo's taken let me know just pm me
thanks for reading

I hope somebody has told the Lions thats the day they are moving from Twycross, other wise it could be delayed!

Considering they have been moved before (from Edinburgh) I suspect that a dart gun might be needed to persuade them across to Dudley! :D Little do they know whats coming...

Just quoting what the keeper had told me, but personnally I'll believe it when it happens
as most things seem to have hiccups these days

Yes but that can only be done safely in the house getting them in could be fun.

You could say that I visit Twycross alot and I have never seen them inside,I also know people that visit more than me and they haven`t seen them indoors!

I go twycross alot as in once a week or once a fortnight at the least (I want to take the career path as a keeper) and have never seen them inside. The outside enclosure when had an apology sign for the amount of bones there were lying about as they couldn't get them in lol. Now they seem to have adjusted to the cold too. I went on Thursday last week. it was freezing, and they were out!

Hi

Couple of questions about the orang utans!

What exactly are they doing to the enclosure? Is it all work on their quarters or any on the outside part?

After visiting in early October I did notice that the orangs had none of the usual enrichment that you see ie blankets, sacks or in fact anything at all in their outside bit? They also had no food as I could see (not saying they are not fed!!!)

They spent ages fishing for leaves from the moat, only the 2 orangs on the right hand side were out, 1 used the firemans hose to hang on to stretch out (very close to the electric wire) to fish out leaves and the other one used a stick to fish with for leaves! Very interesting to watch how they were amusing themselves and they were eating the leaves they caught.

Just wondering what sort of enrichment they do for the orang utans?

I didn't think much of the enclosure from an animals point of view - but interesting design statement! Does anyone have any photos of the original concept (I assume it has been altered slightly)

Thanks for the update :)

On my last visit the keepers were unsure of either date but this is fantastic! Itar did look a little bored and lonely last time i went, so hopefully two females will keep him entertained ;)

Just a little update for you on Monday the two orang's were out and joyfully playing with sacks and what looked like a large rubber band ball but I dare say it was made of something else. I totally agree with you about the outside design it is very inadequite for the animals but unfortunatly I don't know if the outside will be altered but will ask when I return there thursday next week.
Just put a photo on Dudley Zoo gallary it was taken monday 9th hope you enjoy

many thanks
I presume they'll be removing one of the dividing walls on the front of the enclosure to give them some more room to move around in.
It's a pity they can't do anything with the moat but we all know why.

nps, ye dudley has a fun life

Here's a thought do you think they could've moved them to the bear ravine if they had improved the tecton buildings as they would have had a great deal more room to move around in or is this just a silly idea
then they could've used the building to put crocodiles or something sim in

Adrian,
On my last visit I was told that the moat is going to be filled in, so the outside area will almost double in size.
As for the bear ravine I'd prefer to see the giraffes down there.
